Text in Conversation
As the first step in this assignment, you will select a culture/community you want to study, focusing on a particular issue for research.  You will explore the scholarly discussion about your selected topic. By using search engines such as Stanford library databases, you will conduct online research using keywords and concepts related to your topic; i.e. what cultural information does the article include? What might other sources of information help you strengthen your argument and support your synthesis? The purpose is to introduce you to the advanced library research, help you understand the larger scholarly conversation about your topic, and prepare you to develop your argument.

You will learn the qualitative research method and field-working skills to guide you in observing and interviewing people from your selected culture to find out more about your topic. The purpose of this assignment is to teach you how to design your research and construct a strong argument based on primary and secondary sources.
